This was a clinincal study done on
Type I diabetes from 1983 to 1993 by the National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)*. The study included 1,441
volunteers randomly placed into a standard therapy and an intensive treatment
group.
Hypothesis: Normalizing (lowering) glucose levels will prevent or delay the long-term complications of Type I diabetes.
Summary of Results:
-76% reduced risk of eye diseaseRisks of Intensive Treatment:
-50% reduced risk of kidney disease
-60% reduced risk of nerve disease
-increased risk of hypoglycemia episodes
-weight gain
-doubled short-term cost
